- Genetic test results showed that she did not inherit the MRD1 gene from dad or the DM gene from mom. She carrier 1 gene for Copper Toxicosis. Dogs affected by this gene have difficulty excreting excess copper from the liver but miniature Australian shepherds are not currently one of the breed identified as affected or studied enough to determine if this gene increases the risk of developing the actual disease.
